A small bird sits on a large, round wooden post. The bird has grey underparts, with a dark blue back and red-orange on face and neck. The edge of a jetty is visible with choppy water behind.

Warou

The Warou (Welcome Swallow, Hirundo neoxena) is one of the most difficult birds to photograph. Its rapid, darting flight makes for a difficult time even keeping the bird in the frame, let alone getting focus.

It is perhaps no surprise, then, that the photo that makes the grade is of a stationary bird!

This one alighted on a jetty post at Lake Rotorua while I was trying to photograph Weweia on the water.
