A Tawny Frogmouth sits in a tree, which it closely resembles. The bird looks like it is covered in brown bark.

Tawny Frogmouth

The Tawny Frogmouth is an unusual looking bird found throughout Australia, where it is considered one of the country’s most effective species at pest control.

Their diet ranges from ants to small mammals. While they are sometimes thought to be owls, the only significant trait they share is their nocturnal lifestyle.

One key difference is that the Tawny Frogmouth relies on camouflage for defence when roosting in open boughs of trees, which is quite evident in this photo taken in the Australian Outback aviary at Mandai Bird Paradise, Singapore.
