The bird is perched on a tree branch which is very low over the green lake water. It has its back to the photographer but is looking to its left so we can see its face.

Kawaupaka

The Kawaupaka (Little Shag, Phalacrocorax melanoleucos) is Aotearoa New Zealand’s most abundant shag species, being present in both marine and freshwater ecosystems.

It is easily identified by the head and bill — note the short, yellow bill set back into the face.

This example was seen on the lower reservoir at Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne — a location where I always see shags.
