A Pīwakawaka (New Zealand Fantail) perched on a twig.

Pīwakawaka

The Pīwakawaka (Fantail, Rhipidura fuliginosa) is cute in every way.

It is diminutive, has an almost melodic chirruping, gets about with dazzling aerial agility, and is not afraid to get close to humans. I’d also go as far to say it has an excellent colour scheme. Not the brightest or most striking, but pleasing on the eye.

This one was flitting about my back garden, pausing briefly on this twig. My neighbour’s house lent a wonderfully harmonious yellow background.

This photo was not taken in the middle of a main road; I don’t want to pinpoint a family home, so it’s in the general area.
