A head shot of Orwell the Takahē.

Orbell the Takahē

Thought extinct for 50 years (1898-1948), the South Island Takahē (porphyrio hochstetteri) is now classified Nationally Vulnerable which is a great result on the part of conservation efforts. (There are two levels between this level and Extinct.)

This handsome bird is Orbell, who lives at Zealandia with his partner Nio. In 2019 the pair successfully raised a chick, Te Āwhiorangi, who was returned to the Takahē’s only remaining natural range, in the Murchison Mountains, in Fiordland.
