A Kererū (New Zealand Pigeon) sitting amongst the foliage of a Kōwhai tree.

Kererū

I remember this October day in 2008. I was visiting my Mum with my sons and we spotted this Kererū (New Zealand Pigeon, Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae) on a bush at the end of her driveway.

I took the opportunity to teach one of my sons how to stalk a bird to get the best shot — take a photo, then advance; take another, then advance; and so on.

In the end we gave up and went back inside because we got within about a metre of it and it showed no sign of wanting to leave.

This photo was not taken in the middle of a shopping centre; I don’t want to pinpoint a family home, so it’s in the general area.
