A Kawau Tūī (Little Black Shag) perched on a wooden pole by the water.

Kawau Tūī

There are many species of Shag (known in other parts of the world as Cormorants) present in Aoteoroa New Zealand, but only a handful of those are commonly seen.

The Kawau Tūī (Little Black Shag, Phalacrocorax melanoleucos) is one of the common ones. Often seen in small flocks, this solitary character was hanging out on a jetty pole at the Waimea Lagoon, adjacent to the Waikanae River estuary.
