A Kāruhiruhi (Pied Shag) in flight, carrying a large piece of dead flax.

Kāruhiruhi

The Kāruhiruhi (Pied Shag, Phalacrocorax varius) is one of New Zealand’s two common large shags, found in many coastal areas of Aotearoa New Zealand.

I watched this one at Waimanu Lagoons, Waikanae Beach for quite some, as it flew back and between a stand of trees and the Waikanae river mouth, fetching nesting materials — very evident in this photo.
