A Karearea is perched high on a thick tree trunk, looking to one side.

Kārearea

The Kārearea (New Zealand Falcon, Falco novaeseelandiae) is New Zealand’s only endemic Raptor and much less prevalent than the larger, native Kāhu (Swamp Harrier).

It is, however, the better looking of the two. This one was calmly sitting on a tree bough above the busiest pathway in Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne. In fact, I only noticed it because a small group of people were standing nearby staring up at it.
