A Hihi (Stitchbird) perched on a near vertical branch.

Hihi

The Hihi (Stitchbird, Notiomystis cincta) is a striking bird with a striking, shrill call that can be heard at considerable distance through the forest.

Very rare, its habitat is now limited to several managed populations on offshore islands and in the Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne wildlife ecosanctuary in Wellington, less than half an hour’s drive from my home.

I have been fortunate to see Hihi on many visits to Zealandia, particularly in the Heritage Discovery Area.
