The American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) is one of six flamingo species, and perhaps the most widely known, due to its northernmost range being in southern Florida, where many a TV show and movie has featured them.
This specimen was in a small lake near the entrance of the now-closed Jurong Bird Park in Singapore, where at least three flamingo species were present.
Flamingoes are great examples of ‘you are what you eat’ as the bright pink, or even red, colouring comes largely from pigments in their food.
