A small shorebird is walking in shallow water. It has a rich rufous chest and mottled brown-to-black wing and tail feathers and cap. Part of the face and the rump are an off white. The bird is bending forward, its dark brown beak touching the water surface, foraging for food. Its legs are slender and yellowish, and the bird's reflection is visible on the water below. The background is blurred water with a mix of blue and brownish hues.

Tūturiwhatu

On only my second encounter with a Tūturiwhatu (New Zealand Dotterel, Charadrius obscurus) I was greeted with this one in beautiful breeding plumage.

I spied it when I was quite close, so knew it was not too perturbed by my presence, and set about capturing some images, with this one winning out of many.
