A small bird with brown and white plumage stands on a rocky and shell-covered shoreline. The bird has a short, dark beak and is surrounded by scattered shells and small patches of vegetation.

Pohowera

I had previously only managed to photograph Pohowera (Banded Dotterel, Charadrius bicinctus) in the vicinity of Wellington Airport, and have not seen them in many other places.

I walk along Te Ara Piko alongside the Pāuatahanui Inlet brought me to Ration Point where a flock of 30 or more had congregated. Out of breeding plumage, they are inconspicuous and well camouflaged on stone and shell banks.
