A grey and white heron with yellow legs standing in shallow water. The bird is bending forward with its beak close to the water's surface, possibly catching prey. Its wings are slightly open, and water droplets are visible around its beak, indicating recent movement or feeding activity. The water around the bird is calm with gentle ripples.

Matuku Moana

When preparing this post, it dawned on me this is one of a few native birds I had not used the Māori name for. I did that, I recall, because this bird self-introduced long after European colonisation of Aotearoa New Zealand, and so I considered its English name canonical. Yet, I have used Warou instead of Welcome Swallow.

Anyway, for consistency I have switched to Matuku moana (White-faced Heron, Egretta novaehollandiae) for this post and have altered the previous entry as well.

This one was seen at Waimanu Lagoons at the Waikanae River mouth.
