A small bird perched on a thin branch surrounded by dense foliage. The bird has a brown, speckled plumage with a lighter, streaked chest and a slightly curved beak. Its eyes are dark and alert, and it appears to be well-camouflaged among the branches and green leaves. The background is a blur of brown and green tones, suggesting a natural, wooded environment.

Mātātā

Since first discovering there are Mātātā (Fernbird, Bowdleria punctata) present in Pāuatahanui Wildlife Reserve, it is a rare visit where I don’t hear them and I see them about half the time. Occasionally, I have a close encounter, such as this one which was in a shrub right next to the track.
