A masked lapwing bird in mid-flight against a clear blue sky. The bird has a white underside, brown wings and back, and a distinctive yellow wattle on its face. Its wings are spread wide as it glides through the air.

After years of escaping my lens, I’ve finally begun to turn the tables on Masked Lapwings (Spur-winged Plover, Vanillas miles).

This bird flew past me as I lay in wait at Ration Point on the Pāuatahanui Inlet.
