The image shows a cormorant, a type of water bird, standing on a rocky and muddy shoreline. The bird has dark plumage and is facing to the right. Its long neck and body are prominent, and it has a slightly hooked beak. The background consists of a mix of small rocks and patches of green moss or algae. The water is visible in the foreground, reflecting the bird and its surroundings. The lighting suggests it is a sunny day.

Māpunga

Despite being Aotearoa New Zealand’s second-most populous shag, I don’t see that many.

This one was seen from a hide in the Pāuatahanui Wildlife Reserve. I’ve only been to this hide a few times now, but have always seen Māpunga resting on the bank of the Pāuatahanui Stream mouth.
