The image shows a bird wading in shallow water. The bird has a long, slender, slightly curved bill that is pink with a black tip. Its plumage is a mix of brown and gray tones, with a lighter underbelly. The bird is walking through the water, surrounded by small, round objects that appear to be pebbles or shells scattered across the surface. The background is a uniform, muted blue-gray color, indicating a calm water surface. The bird's legs are long and dark, adapted for wading.

Kuaka

The Kuaka (Bar-tailed Godwit, Limosa lapponica) is an Abundant Arctic Migrant, which is to say it doesn’t breed here, but arrives in great numbers for our summers — after an 11,700 km direct flight!

This one was one of a handful feeding on the mudflats of the Manawatu River Estuary near Foxton Beach.
