The image shows a large white egret, standing on the grassy edge of a body of water. The egret has a long, slender neck and a sharp, pointed yellow-orange beak. Its plumage is pure white, and it has long, delicate feathers trailing from its back. The bird's legs are long and black. The water in the background is dark blue with ripples, and there are some green grasses and small plants near the bird's feet. The lighting is bright, suggesting a sunny day.

Kōtuku

I remember being taken to Okarito, in Westland, when I was a young child, with the express intent to see the colony of Kōtuku (White Heron, Ardea modesta). Other than in zoos, I have not seen one since until I was alerted to this one hanging around the Waimanu Lagoons at the Waikanae River mouth.
