A California quail is perched on a weathered stone or concrete surface. The bird has a distinctive black face with a white outline, a plume of black feathers on its head, and a body covered in intricate patterns of gray and white feathers. The background is filled with lush green foliage and some red berries, giving a natural and vibrant setting.

California Quail

Having just entered Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne, I had completed setting up my camera when I spied a California Quail (Koera, Callipepla californica) mother and chicks walking along the base of a fence. While crouching to get shots of the babies, I suddenly notice Dad walking along the top of the fence with this beautiful background.
