The image shows a single bird, a type of grebe, floating on water. The water appears to be a murky greenish color, likely a pond or lake. The bird has a dark brown body with lighter brown feathers on its chest and a distinctive dark head with a slight crest. Its beak is dark, and it has striking greenish-yellow eyes. The bird seems to be calmly resting on the water's surface, and there are small ripples around it. The lighting suggests it's a bright day.

Weweia

In my earlier post of the Weweia (New Zealand Dabchick, Poliocephalus rufopectus), I claimed “They do not like humans, so it took several stalking attempts in dense cover.”

I was explaining this to my wife recently as we were walking along the lakefront at Lake Rotorua, because she pointed out what she believed was one.

She was right. I was wrong. We had several walks at the lake and every time we saw Weweia, and fairly close as well.

With over 10 years more experience and some better equipment, I now have a much clearer picture of a Weweia!

For the record, I reckon their “do not cross” boundary is around the 5-10 metre mark.
