The image shows a bird walking on a stone chip road. The bird has a brown body with darker brown streaks on its back and wings. Its head is a lighter brown, and it has a long, slightly curved beak. The bird's legs and feet are pinkish in color. In the background, there is a strip of green grass along the edge of the pavement. The bird appears to be in motion, with one foot lifted as if taking a step.

Weka

The only Weka (Gallirallus australis) I can remember seeing were on family holidays when I was a kid. We’d stop at the side of the road for a snack break or to stretch our legs and they might appear out of the verges.

How fitting it was, then, that it was while I was retracing the route of those very holidays that a pair of Weka would suddenly appear out of a road verge while I was stopped!

Unfortunately, I had stopped to shoot wide landscape scenes so had totally the wrong lens on the camera and this is not as high quality as I would have liked.
