The picture shows a group of birds by a body of water. In the foreground, there is a single bird standing on one leg, which is white with pale pink wings. This bird has a long, flat, spatula-shaped beak. Its head is bald and a very pale blue with some black spots. It has a blue band on its leg. In the background, there are several vibrant orange-pink ibises, creating a contrast with the lighter pink bird in front. The setting is a bird sanctuary, with a concrete edge leading into the water where the birds are gathered.

Roseate Spoonbill

I am fortunate that I can see Kōtuku Ngutupapa (Royal Spoonbills) not far from my home. It was a real treat, however, to see this Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) in the Crimson Wetlands aviary at Mandai Bird Paradise, Singapore.

Like Flamingos, the pink colour of the Roseate Spoonbill comes from its diet, though apparently it does not spread to all its plumage.
