The image shows a close-up of a pigeon perched among some green foliage. The bird has a vibrant plumage with a mix of iridescent green and purple on its neck and a deep wine-red on its body. Its chest is white, creating a striking contrast with the darker colors. The pigeon's eye is bright red with a black pupil, and its beak is a reddish pink and orange. The background is softly blurred, highlighting the bird and the delicate leaves of the surrounding vegetation.

Kererū

It is hard to miss the bulk of a Kererū (New Zealand Pigeon, Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae) when it clumsily ‘crashes’ onto a slender tree branch. All the more when the tree in question is right outside your window! I took this photo from inside my house.

A Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne newsletter early in 2024 described certain behaviours of fledgling birds thus…

…if you see a bird … landing on an offshoot that clearly can’t support its weight, it may well be a fledgling (the exception being kererū, which retain the inability to identify supportive branches into adulthood).

This photo was not taken in the middle of a main road; I don’t want to pinpoint a family home, so it’s in the general area.
