The image shows a bird, a shag or cormorant, in flight over the ocean. The bird is characterized by its long neck and streamlined body. It has a distinctive black and white pattern on its head and neck, with a greenish-blue patch near its eye. The bird is carrying some seaweed in its beak, probably for nesting purposes. Below the bird, there are rocky formations covered with algae or barnacles, and the ocean water is visible in the background with gentle waves.

Kawau Tikitiki

The Kawau Tikitiki (Parekareka, Spotted Shag, Blue Shag, Phalacrocorax punctatus) is perhaps the most distinctive shag of those seen commonly in Aotearoa New Zealand.

I see one from time to time in the inner Wellington Harbour, however this one was one of many flying back and forth fetching nesting material at Ohau Point, just north of Kaikōura.
