The image shows a small bird perched on a branch. The bird has a striking appearance with a black head and upper body, and a distinctive white patch on the back of its head. Its wings and back have a mix of black and yellow markings, while its underparts are lighter, with a mix of yellow and grayish-white. The bird has a slender, pointed beak. It is wearing two colored bands on its legs, one red and one green, which are for identification or research purposes. The background is filled with green foliage, suggesting a natural, outdoor setting.

Hihi

The Hihi (Stitchbird, Notiomystis cincta) is one of my favourite birds. Classed as rare, it is a real treat to see on my visits to Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne.

In the first couple of years I visited to ecosanctuary, I would only ever see them in a specific area, but more recently I have seen them from many different tracks.

This one was one of two strutting their stuff at a Kākā feeding station on the upper reaches of Lake Road; the ‘main’ road of the park.
