A Toutoutwai (North Island Robin) standing on a mossy tree root.

Toutouwai

Every time I venture into Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne, I have at least one encounter with a Toutouwai (North Island Robin, Petroica longipes).

They are not shy birds, often hopping right around people’s feet or sitting on a branch almost within reach.

This one was perched on a tree root near the base of the Beech Track, a spot I have seen them many times, along with Pīwakawaka, Korimako, Tīeke, Pōpokotea and more.

I liked this photo so much, I had it printed for my wall.
